Job Description

Job Summary

We are seeking to recruit a Transport Planning Consultant to join our Highway and Multi Modal Planning team within our Transport Planning Business to help win and deliver projects. This role is a full time permanent role to be located in St Albans, Hertfordshire, which is one of our central hubs for the Transport Planning and Development Planning team and located 20 minutes north from London St Pancras / Kings Cross. Our Highway and Multi-Modal Planning team, within the Transport Planning business area, plan and evaluate future transport schemes, forecast demand and revenue, undertake economic appraisal, develop business cases, transport strategies as well as determine the relationships between spatial planning and transport. We undertake transport modelling spanning national, regional, local as well as detailed micro-simulation. Our team uses technology and Big Data (e.g. Mobile Phone and Google API data) in developing transport tools. We work collaboratively with colleagues across AECOM’s many disciplines, including planners, designers, engineers, regeneration and environmental specialists.

Our current UK public sector clients include the Department of Transport, Transport for London, Highways England as well as a host of local authorities and London boroughs within England. We operate a number of Frameworks from the team so have a really diverse range of projects to choose from. We have proactively managed some of the UK’s most high profile Transport Planning and infrastructure projects which are at the forefront of the Transport Planning industry. These span innovative use and application of mobile phone data through to close partnership working and research with Universities and academia.

An ideal candidate will come from an analytical background, such as mathematics, economics, geography, or engineering and will have experience in transport planning and possess key responsibilities listed below. We value a combination of analytical and communication skills, with a creative and enthusiastic approach to problem solving. We are seeking an individual with an in depth appreciation of their chosen area with good knowledge of wider transport planning issues. This is an exciting opportunity to join an accomplished team and work on a range of ground-breaking and innovative projects for a wide variety of clients.

As a Transport Planning Consultant, your responsibilities will include the following:

  • Delivering high quality technical tasks independently and with support from more senior staff;

  • Interacting and coordinating with other business lines on various multi-disciplinary projects;

  • Contributing to technical client reports and presentations and proposals and respond to client queries resulting from client reports;

  • Receive project briefs from a Senior Manager;

  • Attending and contributing to client progress meetings and debriefs;

  • Understanding and implementing Quality Assurance procedures and working within financial and programme constraints; and

  • Prepare client presentations and supporting documentation with a Senior Manager, and attend as necessary.

 

Minimum Requirements

  • Proven analytical, data manipulation or statistical skills using appropriate software;

  • Knowledge and experience in transport demand and supply modelling, forecasting and experience in appraisal and evaluation of transport proposals;

  • Good knowledge of transport modelling related software packages e.g. SATURN, PARAMICS, CUBE, EMME, VISUM, VISSIM, TUBA as wells as knowledge and experience of GIS software;

  • Knowledge and experience in computer programming languages (e.g. VBA, SQL, Python);

  • Good knowledge and familiarity with key guidance documents, such as WebTAG;

  • Self-motivation and capability to undertake specific tasks with minimum supervision;

  • Ability to manage own time to meet project deadlines;

  • Excellent presentation skills;

  • Good technical writing capability;

  • Capability to set out specific tasks and supervise others in the completion of these tasks;

  • The ability to communicate technical and management aspects of work to senior staff;

  • Capability to set out and produce quality client reports; and

  • Appreciation of project risk issues and application of these to day-to-day tasks.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Membership or working towards membership of a chartered professional institution such as CIHT, TPS, CILT or ICE; and

  • A Master’s degree or PhD in Transport Planning or related subject/social based discipline.
