Job Description

Atkins’ Transportation Consultancy Practice comprises 500 staff delivering planning, technical and advisory consultancy services to a wide-ranging client base in the UK and overseas. We are part of a larger Transportation business of 3,000 talented professionals covering highway, rail and local transport sectors in the UK. In 2018 we will be growing our Consultancy team in Atkins’ Glasgow office to better support our successful engineering design business and face the range of strategic highway and local transport planning opportunities that are emerging in Scotland. Over the next year we want to develop a transport planning team that provides the full range of strategic and local planning, transport modelling, business case and development planning skills. We are looking for people to join us at different levels who want to contribute to shaping and growing a high performing, dynamic team that works seamlessly with our wider national Transportation business but also helps grow our presence in our local Scottish markets.The successful candidate for this role will lead and shape the transport planning team and be responsible for securing and delivering work from local clients, including working with our engineering project teams. The successful candidate will have a background in transport planning with experience in working across a range of projects for multiple clients. Ideally this should include projects for Transport Scotland and for some of the larger local authorities in Scotland – though we will also consider candidates with experience from elsewhere in the UK looking to develop their career in Scotland. The candidate must have a broad range of transport planning skills covering scheme development, modelling and business case, development planning and experience in working alongside engineers, planner and environmental specialists. We are looking for an individual with excellent people leadership skills and collaborative behaviours and who will be excited by the challenge of growing a transport planning team in Scotland. The role will require working with our market and business development teams to identify, position us for and secure transport commissions in the Scottish market. The successful candidate will be capable of engaging effectively with new and existing clients and will have a track record of successfully winning and delivering transport planning projects. This will require an understanding of working in a fast-paced consultancy environment blending excellent technical transport planning skills and knowledge with commercial and project management expertise.This role is based on our Glasgow office.Responsibilities • Team leadership with responsibility for line management and technical development of a transport planning team in Scotland, including staff mentoring, recruitment, staff safety and wellbeing and resource prioritisation. • Leading and managing a portfolio of transport planning bids, focussing on the Scottish market but also providing support to our teams in the North of England as required. This comprises technical, financial and project management of projects in line with Atkins management systems and processes. • Providing transport planning skills into projects delivered by our engineering and projects business based in Scotland.• Playing a key role in work winning on a wide range of transport planning areas including working with our market and business development teams in Scotland to help define business strategy and support the identification and pursuit of major transport opportunities and frameworks. This will include working as part of Key Account Management teams for our largest Scottish clients.• Developing relationships with key clients and promoting Atkins working with our Scotland Market Director and the Key Account Management teams.• Identifying and implementing opportunities for deploying innovative styles and techniques in project delivery.Requirements • Appropriate academic and professional qualifications - degree qualified in a relevant discipline (such as Geography, Urban Planning, Engineering, Transport Planning, Mathematics, Economics). • Experience of working in a Transport Planning Consultancy, Central Government or a Local Authority, ideally in Scotland with an existing profile with key clients in the Scottish market. • Excellent report writing, other written and numerical presentation skills. • Willingness to travel to different client locations in Scotland and the North of England • Strong track record of managing the operation of teams to successfully deliver against business objectives and targets,ideally within a consultancy environment. • Proven track record leading teams to deliver high quality technical transport planning work within commercial and financial constraints. • Excellent communication skills to engage effectively with clients and teams across Atkins, understanding and meeting client requirements, unlocking new work and developing team performance. • Highly knowledgeable about the current Scottish and UK transport policy context and able to utilise this knowledge through projects and client interaction. • Experience and technical competency in at least three of the following: local transport planning; strategic transport planning; transport modelling; business case preparation; transport scheme development; public transport planning; development planning; traffic engineering; or statutory processes. • Committed to continuous improvement and innovation across transport planning. Benefits Atkins is a large international multi-disciplinary consultancy that offers great scope for your career.
