Job Description

About the Role

As one of the world’s leading engineering, professional services and technical consultancy firms, at WSP, we’re passionate about the big questions. And big answers, naturally. For us that’s all about reaching beyond the expected to do work that’ll make a profound impact felt long into the future.

A Senior Transport Planner is required, to join the Leeds Office, to support the on-going growth of the transportation business with the specific aim to support our public sector team and capitalise on emerging market opportunities. The candidate would be serving clients across the north of the UK with a team that is also supportive of (public transport) initiatives in Central and Southern England and Internationally.

The opportunity will primarily help support existing and growing workloads for a range of regional clients in South and West Yorkshire, Greater Manchester and Tyne & Wear, and support the regional and national public transport planning team.

The transport team across the Leeds and Manchester offices offers clients a wide range of multi-disciplinary and cross-sector services including but not limited to; micro-simulation modelling; signal design, transport assessments, scheme business cases and appraisals, demand forecasting and validation, land use modelling, local junction design, road safety audits and site appraisals, master-planning, public transport studies and public consultation.

The ideal candidate will come from an analytical background, such as mathematics, economics, geography, or engineering, and will have experience in transport planning. The successful candidate will be working within a highly skilled transportation and development planning team, known for providing client-ready solutions based on technical competence and expertise.

The team currently has a range of regional highway and public transport modelling projects, micro simulation modelling, scheme appraisal and development assessment work. These are for a variety of clients, including local authorities, government bodies, LEPs and enterprise partnerships and private developers, with an expanding international portfolio.

The role presents an excellent opportunity to progress your career and work within a successful team on a wide range of regionally, nationally and internationally based transport planning and appraisal projects, with opportunities to diversify modelling outputs and appraisal techniques into new and innovative markets and products, including those of a non-transport background.

A typical week would look like:

  • Strong emphasis on project delivery and nurturing of talent.
  • To provide support to major public sector bids in terms of technical input, quality and commercial response.
  • To provide direct support to the northern region Senior Management team, specifically to capitalise on existing/emerging client relationships, framework commissions and evolving regional governance structures.
  • It is envisaged that the role would be primarily public sector, but will respond flexibly to the opportunities presented by devolution, Growth Deals and be supportive of major private sector regeneration opportunities.
  • To strengthen and broaden our technical offering.

About You

We'd love to hear from you if you have:

  • Provision of strategic advice to clients on development investment decisions and strategies, in relation to transport and other engineering factors
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Ability to deliver to tight, competing and stretching deadlines
  • Commercial awareness and ability to financially manage single disciplinary projects
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Knowledge of transport policy and appraisal issues and techniques, and how transport modelling can be used to support and enhance other areas of transport and wider planning and policy.
  • Ability to independently devise study methodology
  • Proven ability to interpret and apply transport models with minimum supervision
  • Understanding of UK WebTAG
  • Ability to work well in a team environment and independently with limited supervision

Desirable Skills:

  • Experience of scheme appraisal and business case preparation or updating
  • Professional membership of a relevant institution.

Clear and concise communication, being able to convey complex issues and communicate persuasively, is essential – you will need to demonstrate you can produce high quality documentation and reports tailored to client requirements, with clear justification of conclusions.

You must be able to understand context, and interpret and clarify client requirements so that appropriate solutions are developed, and appropriately explained to clients, colleagues and co−professionals.

You will be educated to degree level or equivalent, with relevant professional qualification or higher degree and membership of professional bodies being desirable, alongside ability to learn and develop new skills rapidly in response to diverse project requirements.
