We are seeking to recruit a Principal Engineer to join our Transport Planning team in Scotland. The Transport Team undertake transport planning work, providing advice to private sector and local authority clients on access and transportation issues and supporting development proposals through the planning process. The team works closely with our Infrastructure, Services, Structures and Environmental teams on larger multi-disciplinary development proposals.

You will have experience of delivering development proposals as part of a multi-disciplinary team, under the guidance of others. Ideally you will have a track record on leading your own project work and being able to successfully delegate work elements to others.

A typical week would include:

  • Undertaking a project management role on development projects from concept through to submission of planning. You should have an understanding of working within a team to achieve workable and economic masterplan and junction solutions for clients, including for the movement of both people and vehicles. You will be required to undertake all transport planning work and lead others.   You should be able to produce preliminary highway and access designs to a standard suitable for grant of planning consent.
  • Being active on a number of projects / client accounts at any given time. These can vary in both scale and nature, making the workload interesting and challenging. Projects range from small residential, commercial, retail and leisure developments through to the redevelopment of town centres, retail parks, foodstores, transport interchanges and major regeneration / mixed use schemes.
  • Supporting the role of senior staff in managing Transport Assessment and planning stage design work, as well as an understanding of Active Travel, and providing general transportation advice to clients and project teams.
  • Project Management and financial management experience will also be required on individual projects to ensure efficient use of resources and monthly invoicing. The position will report to both a Line Manager and individual Project Managers / Directors as necessary.

 

About You

We would love to hear from you if you have:

  • A degree and approaching, or have achieved, an appropriate professional qualification, either Chartered Engineer (CEng) or Transport Planning Professional (TPP).
  • An understanding of the planning process from the transport perspective, allied with experience of transport planning and input to development masterplans. You will be well versed in the preparation of quality Transport Assessments and Transport Statement, providing supporting information such as Travel Plans and producing focussed Technical You will also have a knowledge of the principles of Active Travel. You will also have been involved in the provision of design advice to clients, architects, and other Design Team members, and have an understanding of the needs of other related disciplines, such as Noise and Air Quality.
  • Experience in a range of development sectors and work types would be beneficial, as would understanding of public transport operations. You will have knowledge of transport policy at local and national level, and an understanding of the role played by Transport Scotland. The ability to think at both strategic and detailed levels is essential.
  • Demonstrable hands-on experience of transportation software (TRICS, ARCADY, PICADY, LINSIG) and analysis, and be competent in the production and use of spreadsheet models. You will also have experience in the application of Designing Streets, DMRB and Local Authority design standards for providing preliminary junction layouts for minor schemes up to major Trunk Road junctions.
  • You will need to have excellent written and spoken communication skills. An enthusiasm for and genuine interest in Transport Planning and Engineering is essential, allowing a close fit with our highly motivated team.
