Public Transport Researcher (Transport Planner/Consultant)

Job Description

Railway and Transport Strategy Centre (RTSC) Research Associate – Public Transport (equivalent to Senior Consultant / Senior Transport Planner level)

Salaries in the range: £34,720 – £42,830 per annum plus a £3,000 per annum market supplement paid monthly with salary and reviewed annually.

The Railway and Transport Strategy Centre (RTSC) at Imperial College London is a globally recognised applied research and consultancy group. We are a growing, multidisciplinary team combining people from industry, consultancy and academic backgrounds. The RTSC's primary activities are research and consultancy for international groups of metro, rail, light rail and bus operators.

We undertake detailed studies on topics of interest and annual performance data benchmarking. Recent research topics include fares and funding policy, driverless metros, whole life cost, and service planning. Our partners include over 90 public transport operators worldwide including Transport for London; we also work for governments and international institutions including the UK Department for Transport and the World Bank.

To support strong growth in existing and new research and consultancy markets, we are seeking to appoint a Research Associate – Public Transport (equivalent to Senior Consultant / Senior Transport Planner or similar level). You will be part of a friendly and supportive team, made up of around 20 colleagues, who are committed to working together to conduct high quality research that makes a real difference to clients and to our stakeholders.

The post involves carrying out research and consultancy projects for public transport providers, often using comparative analysis between international public transport systems to generate advice and recommendations for their senior management. You will gain exposure to the many facets of railway, metro (subway) bus and/or light rail management at both a technical and strategic level, dealing directly with senior figures in the industry.

Due to the applied nature of the work and its industry focus, applications are strongly encouraged from practitioners and consultants in the transport sector; prior work in academia is not a prerequisite. Fluency in written and spoken English is required and an ability to speak foreign languages would be an advantage. The role typically involves international travel several times per year.
