Transport Minister and London Cycling Tsar headline virtual Transport Planning Day

The Transport Planning Society (TPS) has announced the programme for Transport Planning Day 2020 on 16th November.

Transport Minister, Rachel Maclean MP, and the Mayor of London’s Walking and Cycling Commissioner, Will Norman, will speak at a virtual event to mark the third annual Transport Planning Day.

With calls on governments across the UK for a “green recovery” from the COVID-19 Pandemic, this year’s Transport Planning Day focusses on the role of transport planners in tackling climate change and creating a sustainable, healthy future. The speakers include:

• Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Transport, Rachel Maclean’s role includes the forthcoming Transport Decarbonisation Plan
• Will Norman has overseen the roll-out of a range of measures to attract Londoners out of their cars, including delivering new cycleways and low traffic neighbourhoods, projects that have been accelerated to support social distancing in the capital

Transport Planning Day will also feature:

• The Society’s 2020 bursary winner, Georgia Corr, who examined the impact of on-demand food deliveries on transport
• The Royal College of Art’s Dan Phillips presenting their work with communities across England to develop a toolkit for reimagining community placemaking and transport planning, in partnership with TPS

This year’s campaign has been supported by CILT, Jacobs and Arup.

“Our profession is clear: we need to move people and goods in far, far cleaner and greener ways than we do now.

“But we are also under no illusion that ending carbon pollution from transport will be easy. This is exactly why we are having this discussion at Transport Planning Day.

“I am delighted to welcome two key figures in the decarbonisation of British transport to the event as we look to learn from past success and plan for a cleaner, healthier future.”

Transport Minister Rachel Maclean MP said:

“Transport will play a vital role in tackling climate change. By building a cleaner, greener transport system, we will also improve people's health while creating better places to live and driving clean economic growth too.

“Through our response to COVID, we are seizing the opportunities in transport to change people’s travel habits and speed up the development of clean technologies - putting green recovery at the heart of our plans for the future."

Transport Planning Day raises the profile of transport planning and its role in changing people's lives. It aims to engage communities on the role of transport planners and to celebrate the achievements of transport planning.

The day will be hosted online by the Institution of Civil Engineers on behalf of the Transport Planning Society, the professional body for transport planners.

Attendance will be open to members of the Transport Planning Society and Institution of Civil Engineers, or by invitation.
