Virtual parliamentary reception to launch Transport Planning Society’s State of the Nations report: 20 October

The Transport Planning Society (TPS) will launch a report outlining changes to transport and planning policy required for a sustainable future in the UK’s four home nations.

The report – State of the Nations: Transport planning for a sustainable future – will be launched at a virtual parliamentary reception with members of the House of Commons Transport Select Committee on Tuesday 20th October.

The virtual event is being hosted by Transport Committee Chair Huw Merriman MP and will also feature the committee’s former chair Lillian Greenwood MP, and committee members Ruth Cadbury MP and Gavin Newlands MP.

The event will see the report outlined by report author Dr Scott Copsey of the University of Hertfordshire’s Smart Mobility Unit, before being discussed by MPs with questions from the audience.

Commissioned by TPS in the Spring, the report is expected to outline comprehensive recommendations to UK governments on transport spending, planning and workforce skills to accelerate the transition to net zero carbon.

The event will be invitation only and hosted with the kind support of Arup.

The parliamentary reception is part of the TPS’s third annual Transport Planning Day campaign, which leads up to Transport Planning Day on 16th November 2020.

This year’s campaign focusses on the role of transport planners in tackling climate change and creating a sustainable, healthy future.

The transport sector is now the leading source of carbon dioxide emissions in the UK, contributing a third of total emissions.

Transport Planning Day raises the profile of transport planning and its role in changing people's lives. It aims to engage communities on the role of transport planners and to celebrate the achievements of transport planning.
