Transport and land use integration to reduce energy consumption and emissions, London 24 Oct

While political and legal pressure on cities to address poor air quality has dominated much of the urban transport planning debate in recent years, the issues of issues of energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions have received less attention. Yet the transport sector as a whole constitutes a large and growing proportion of total energy consumption and emissions in the UK and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.

The Transport Planning Society has recently published a set of principles for the profession stressing the importance of managing demand by working with spatial planners to minimise the need for movement of people or goods, and supporting options that encourage the least damaging alternatives. In this event, we will explore the role that integrated transport and land use planning can have in reducing travel demand and minimising its negative impacts, and what policies and planning tools are required to make this happen.

The session will be chaired by Keith Buchan, TPS Skills Director, with time for a panel debate and audience questions.

Speakers:
